James Dondero Joins Executive Board of Business School at Southern Methodist University

James Dondero, co-founder and president of Highland Capital Management, has joined the Executive Board for the Cox School of Business. Southern Methodist University recently appointed Dondero to the prestigious position for help guiding and advising the direction of their business school.

James Dondero is one of 100 board members who meet three times a year to discuss the current situation of the business school as well as future goals. Besides Dondero’s involvement with the Cox School of Business, he has been a very active supporter of Southern Methodist University. He has donated large sums of money to the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. Additionally, Highland Capital Management Tower Scholars is a program that sponsors and encourages individuals pursuing public policy in both academic and professional realms.

Before Highland Capital Management, James Dondero had decades of experience in the credit and market industries. His first position was as an analyst at the Morgan Guaranty training program. Around the same time, Dondero graduated from the McIntire School of Commerce with dual majors in Accounting and Finance.

He has also received qualifications as a Certified Public Accountant, a Chartered Financial Analyst and a Certified Management Accountant to help diversify his capabilities. After graduation, Dondero worked with American express in 1985.

He worked as a Corporate Bonds Analyst and was eventually promoted to Portfolio Manager. Before leaving American Express, Dondero was managing over $1 billion worth of assets. Soon after, Protective Life hired Dondero as their Chief Investment Officer for their GIV subsidiary.

Highland Capital Management was founded in 1993 by James Dondero and his partner Mark Okada. The company offers a host of award-winning solutions and services for investors.

Highland Capital Management is perhaps best known for their pioneering development of the Collateralized Loan Obligation. In addition to CLO’s, Highland Capital Management offers services revolving around hedge funds, mutual funds, private equity funds, ETFs and more.

  1. Dondero acquired his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia. He helped to grow the business to be worth over $2 billion. A majority of the members are non-academics who can bring a unique perspective to the discussions.
